High-Q diamond microdisks for optomechanics


Researchers from the group of Paul Barclay (Department of Physics and Astronomy and Institute for Quantum Science and Technology, University of Calgary) have recently reported the fabrication of single-crystal diamond microdisk structures with optical quality factors (Q) exceeding 300 000—a factor of four times higher than previous reported devices. Fabricated using the toolset in the U of A nanoFAB Centre and NRC Edmonton cleanrooms, this high-Q behaviour enables cavity optomechanical experiments in the sideband-resolved regime.

Single-crystal diamond microdisk pedestal shape can be tailored via thermal engineering of the diamond etch process.

This work was recently published in APL Photonics 4, 016101 (2019), and was featured on the journal cover.
