The nanoFAB invites you to attend a public seminar on atomic layer deposition, presented by Dr. Wilfredo Cabrera from Picosun USA. From 9:30–10:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 27th, 2018, Dr. Cabrera will present a technology and applications overview of Picosun’s ALD technologies. A general question-and-answer period will immediately follow the presentation.

Abstract: High quality, conformal thin films have become increasingly important in several large-scale industrial applications. To this day, technologies are faced with the challenge to provide better performance, in particular in those applications that require smaller dimensions. Since the 1970s, atomic layer deposition (ALD) has been investigated as a way of depositing thin films of materials “atomic layer at a time” in a conformal manner. At the time, it was considered too slow of a deposition technique, such that industrial applications opted towards other methodologies. Now, with the need for increased performance at the atomic scale, ALD has become a key solution in providing the necessary materials needed in various industries. Applications have grown exponentially over the past several years, the main driving force being the constantly decreasing size of microelectronic components, and the increasing level of system integration. Other central application areas for ALD are LED and MEMS manufacturing, and production of e.g. corrosion-resistant and anti-tarnish coatings, and bioactive coatings for medical uses. Health technologies can be expected to be the next big market for ALD, where atomic-scale conformal thin films will enable a vast number of new devices and applications.
Topics that will be covered during this presentation will range from how ALD has become the technology of choice for advanced coating applications, what hardware is utilized for high-throughput industrial manufacturing, and where the new technological developments are emerging for ALD.
